is hand drawn 16mm film making (or Super 8 35mm) the true blue spanner in the works luddite response to the digital age

Drawing directly on film with a texta is cheaper than having a cup of coffee

bits of letraset have been stuck on to this strip of film in the sound and image areasometimes i think that watching an animated film like this is like watching a train go bythis is a black and white version of a colour film

Drawing directly on the emulsion there is a roughness about it. If you let the process have its head it has an uncontrolled edge suggesting microscopic forms. It is about hands in the same way that weaving, embroidery, knitting, strumming a guitar, chanting mantras and saying the rosary are. These are ritualistic repetitive activities that have an element of trance about them. Like walking, each step/frame moves one forward.
by showing a 8-20 frame strip of 16mm film next to an animated loop of that same strip we can see how the translation from still to animation works

There is an element of purging and healing about continual creation bleaching and etching of new frames.
