This project works at mapping a language that is disappearing as the new media rolls over the old. The old media of hand-drawn film works with the materiality of film; scratching, bleaching, drawing, sticking things directly to the film surface. The disappearing language is the words and syntax of working directly with the surface of motion picture film.

By showing an 8-20 frame strip of 16mm film next to an animated version of that same strip of images we can experience how the translation from still to animation works. We see the movement and effect that is not evident in a naive reading of the orginal material. Something is gained in this translation.

It can also be a worthwhile exercise to try and observe both these worlds simultaneously, floating between them in an ambiguous space. A space somewhere between stillness and movement.
