I didn't live with my father until I was 14 years old. He was a
prisoner of war and then after his release he came to Australia
on his own. We eventually joined him after a long, long journey
by ship.
During the journey I learnt to play a card game called 'Napolitane'.
I was 14 years old and an older girl taught me how to play. Children
were discouraged from playing cards because they were supposed to
spend thier time learning to read. So
learning to play the cards was part of being grown up.
In Italy there was no TV, no radio, we just played cards. That's
why we had so many kids.
