| In 1982
I received a parcel in the post from Texas. Inside was this handbag
sent to me by my sister’s mother-in-law, Caroline. Several
years earlier we had spent many
a balmy evening tearing around San Antonio in a 1964 Cadillac convertible,
so she knew I was just the person for her exotic cast-off.
Caroline was a rich divorcee who always spent her alimony in $100
bills. During the 70’s she had travelled the world, including
a trip to Australia where she met my mother. Between the two of
them they had orchestrated a match making job that has connected
our families over the last 25 years.
Caroline had bought the bag in Nairobi from Zimmerman the Taxidermist
and it arrived at precisely the right moment in my life. St Kilda
and Elwood were awash with cocktail parties.
