| Who
remembers the Giggle Palace and having to squeeze through a jungle
of tangled pipes? Coloured hoses grew from the floor up to
the darkness above and dragged at clothes as you forced your way
into the hallowed Palace. Sometimes you got stuck, sometimes you
panicked, you were alone and it felt like anything could happen,
but really it was just silly and produced a fit of the giggles.
Then when you finally reached the vast hall space, the towering,
sinuous wooden slides of the slippery dip could be surfed down on
a mat and the choice of degree of danger was yours.
The Giggle Palace burnt down in 1985 — but while it can be remembered,
it can be re-imagined and rebuilt. Why not — just for fun.
