Home Back Forward

I’ve got an old boat called the Volunteer. It was built in Port Melbourne in 1920. It came into my family’s possession in approximately 1930 and belonged to my grandfather who then gave it to my father. It was in a very damaged state so they put a new keel on it in the backyard and we sailed it for more than 20 years.

When my grandfather died, we sold it to the Sorrento Sailing Club to be used as a rescue boat and I didn’t see it again for another 20 years.

Around 1989/90 a friend asked me to come and have a look at a boat in a yard in Footscray. I saw a derelict heap poking out behind some containers. I was lucky I saw it. I didn’t recognise it at first .... it was the Volunteer.

I bought it for $100 and we restored it as a sailing boat 21 years ago. Every weekend at least one member of my family takes it out for a sail.
