A Hungarian Review
On the 15th of March 1944 there was a gala performance at the Hungarian National Theatre in Budapest. The play was "Kossuth", a historical drama about Lajos Kossuth, the leader of the 1848-49 war of independence in Hungary. The Hungarians lost, and Kossuth went into exile.

A five year old boy played a Hungarian emigre to America who meets Kossuth during the statesman's American tour. The boy did not have a speaking role, he was required to give Kossuth a pillow on which the flag of Hungary was placed.

That boy is now a retiree living in St Kilda, having experienced refugee status twice in his life. Shortly after the gala performance German troops occupied Hungary, and the relative tranquility of Hungary was over. Within a few weeks bombing raids were launched against Budapest and the boy spent a lot of time in air raid shelters in 1944.

The newspaper article reviewing the play was kept; in one of the pictures he is shown between two women.
