I can vividly recall as a schoolboy attending Melbourne Church
of England Grammar School where I developed a sort of love
affair with the Royal Family. I kept a scrap book of newspaper
cuttings of the Royals, especially their visits to Australia, and
I really believed that they were responsible for the security and
prosperity we enjoyed as Jewish citizens of this country.
In 1955 I married a newly arrived immigrant from France, Annita Szkop.
Among the gifts received at the Kitchen Tea held prior to the wedding,
was this caddy filled with tea.
After our marriage we moved into a small flat in East St.
Kilda and up it went on the kitchen shelf above the stove. There
it has remained throughout our 46 years marriage faithfully
cherished and refilled with Bushells, Lan-Choo, Liptons or Tiny
Tips.
Though my love affair with the Royals has long since faded, I am
unwilling to consign this very well used and fading caddy to that
unused upper kitchen cupboard which houses our long forgotten and
timeworn wedding mementos.
