The first thing you smelt when you came to Port was vanilla from the biscuit factory. On other days you could smell plum puddings or tomato sauce from Tom Piper. Sometimes they burnt the Violet Crumble at Hoadley’s. It smelt revolting.

We used to discuss the smells the way other people talked about the weather. You didn’t need to leave Port to get a job.
