In 1956 Margaret was trudging around Fawkner trying to find her
friend’s house. She was lost and mud was oozing into her high
heels from the unmade footpaths of this new suburb.
Leo was out driving with some friends and offered Margaret a lift.
After refusing at first she reluctantly accepted. She gave up on
her original engagement and spent the rest of the afternoon with
Leo and his friends, eating the cake she had brought for the afternoon
tea in Fawkner.
Neither Leo or Margaret spoke much English, they communicated by
using a dictionary and a few German words that the Italians had
picked up during the 2nd World War. Leo was very keen and asked
Margaret out. She agreed but was not so sure about this sharply
dressed Italian, so she stood him up.
Undaunted Leo visited her work the next day. He said “an
appointment is an appointment”, and Margaret
knew he was a man of his word. They were married 10 months
later. They have been married for 44 years. English is their common
language learnt from the dictionary that Leo always kept in his
back pocket.
