These toys were given to my son by a neighbour in the block of
flats in Blessington St St Kilda. This flat was the first place
I lived in Australia after migrating from Japan. The neighbour who
gave these toys to my son from her collection of ‘op shop
toys’, herself an artist, became my good friend.
Even after my son grew out of these 'baby toys',
they came to represent the first two years of my experiences and
memories as a migrant mother from a country with a different
culture and language.
I started practising art in Australia and have used these toys
in my installation works. When I create environments which represent
my experience, I place these toys somewhere in the space as
subjects of these intense memories of mine.
