ExperimentaLAB is a ground-breaking new initiative
that will see Experimenta collaborating with regional communities
throughout Australia.
The main objectives of the project are:
- To develop sustainable community-based projects that allow
regional communities to explore local concerns through new
media art.
- To provide artists in regional communities with new skills
in the areas of new media arts practice and Community Cultural
Development (CCD).
- To develop new youth audiences for new media arts.
ExperimentaLAB will focus on regional Australian communities
that are often more isolated and less technologically re-sourced than
their urban counterparts. Projects developed through ExperimentaLAB
will address concerns relevant to specific local communities, such
as environmental, cultural, social, health, isolation and aging issues.
Experimenta is passionate about this initiative and believes
that the most interesting, fresh and meaningful artwork in
the next generation will come out of communities working with
new media practice. These communities have a voice and a fresh
perspective that will create insightful work once given the
means and opportunity to explore their ideas through new media.
Facilitating the project is Ian Corcoran, a Melbourne-based
emerging producer who will work with Experimenta in 2004 and
2005 through the Australia Council’s Emerging Producers
in community (EPIC) Initiative. Ian will work closely with
senior Experimenta staff to broker relationships between the
organisation and nominated communities throughout Victoria,
and develop
ExperimentaLAB projects.
