Study Guides
To complement a school visit to each of Experimenta’s major International Biennial of Media Art exhibitions, Experimenta has developed an in-depth study guide, for primary, secondary and tertiary teachers and students to enable deep exploration and extended learning before, during and after their exhibition visit. The study guides expand on the exhibition themes, the artists, their artworks and the technology and techniques involved in their creation. Each study guide unpacks key exhibition artworks through critical thinking questions, discussion points and practical activities, offering many opportunities to promote both disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning across and within the curriculum areas of Visual Arts, Media, English, SOSE, Technology, Science and Information and Communication Technology.
The contents of the study guide is supported by the information about artists and their works, essays and other resources in each of the International Biennial of Media Art exhibition catalogues.

Experimenta Utopia Now, International Biennial of Media Art chases the dream of a perfect world, critiques the scope for happiness on earth as we know it, pokes fun at social and physical boundaries and questions the human race’s ability to preserve itself. As well as unpacking key artworks from the exhibition in detail, the Experimenta Utopia Now study guide also contains a special lift out section exploring contemporary Australian video art through the work of 8 Australian artists.
Experimenta Utopia Now was curated by Liz Hughes, Amy Barclay, Clare Needham, Jen Mizuik and Daine Singer.

In Experimenta Playground, International Biennial of Media Art, artists invited us to play and consider: social behaviour, identity, the real and the imagined, material and immaterial. The artworks in the exhibition re-invented old games and our known environment and revealed narratives in the most unexpected places.
Experimenta Playground was curated by Liz Hughes and Emma McRae.

The artworks and films in the Experimenta House of Tomorrow, International Biennial of Media Art were imaginative fantasies about what the home of the future might be like. They posed questions such as, will we be living with interactive furniture, digital pets and virtual plants? And will the key to better living be delivered through technology?
Experimenta House of Tomorrow was curated by Shiralee Saul, Helen Stuckey and Liz Hughes.
