Since 1986, Experimenta has transformed public spaces, exhibition venues and corporate environments into captivating, interactive, and thought provoking destinations. From large-scale outdoor installations to intimate and extraordinary indoor exhibitions, the artworks shown worldwide by Experimenta are always evocative, intriguing and uniquely multi-sensory.
Vibrant and sophisticated, media art is at the cutting edge of contemporary art. As technologically groundbreaking as they are stylistically diverse, the works selected by Experimenta go beyond the “wow” factor to be intellectually incisive, aesthetically spellbinding, and so emotionally engaging that people come back again and again.
With our society so powerfully driven by technological change and the information economy, Experimenta’s mission to stimulate innovation and enrich all of our lives into the 21st century is not only acutely relevant, but also increasingly important.

EXHIBITING AND TOURING
Our unique exhibitions present compelling artworks that immediately capture and excite the curiosity and imagination of audiences of every age and background. From video art, to interactive sculptures and screen-based interactive installations, media artworks are at the cutting edge of contemporary art practice.
Experimenta’s innovative curatorship takes visitors beyond their accustomed experience of technology, with the physically interactive nature of many works creating an impression that lingers long after the initial encounter. Exhibition venues come alive, prompting people to return time and again.
Our exhibitions have toured to more than 20 venues in capital cities and regional centres around Australia and the UK, attracting over 60,000 guests per year. Select Australian media works are toured by Experimenta to prominent international art events including ISEA 2008 (Singapore), Seoul International Media Art Biennale (Korea), Multimedia Art and Asia Pacific (Singapore and China) and Emocion Artificial (Brazil) where they are considered among the world’s best and place Australia firmly at the forefront of technical and artistic innovation.
Commissioning new work
Experimenta is privileged to commission and mentor artists who extend the creative boundaries of technology in works of surprising potency and imagination.
To date Experimenta has commissioned 18 groundbreaking and engaging new video and interactive works. Facilitating creative collaborations between artists and software programmers, sound engineers, scientists, and games technologists, we guide projects from the early experimental stages to completed, exhibitable art of the highest calibre.
Immersion (2007), a projected underwater environment with sea creatures that respond to your moving shadow with sound and movement and The Shy Picture (2005), a black and white photograph whose characters run away and hide when you approach are just some that have become audience favourites.
With the global perspective of our curatorial and production management consultancies, our initiatives bring emerging Australian talent into the international arena via exhibitions, biennales and arts festivals in Europe, the Americas and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
TRANSFORMING PUBLIC SPACE
Liberated from gallery confines into public spaces, media art dramatically realises its potential to offer compelling, poignant and unforgettable experiences.
Experimenta works in consultation with artists, architects, property developers and local governments to revitalise and transform public spaces into artistic hubs and destinations of wonder, most notably Melbourne’s visionary Digital Harbour development in 2008. Such partnerships bring about an enriching and rewarding communal experience that sparks inspiration and involvement.
Whether turning a pedestrian thoroughfare into a futuristic fantasy with gigantic wi-fi teacups or a music festival into an ethereal realm guarded by unearthly projected faces, our public art direction inspires corporate and civic groups to celebrate the shared essences of place and community.
PARTNERING & CONSULTING
With two decades of experience creating enchanting and profound experiences that people remember and revisit, Experimenta’s arts consultancy is eagerly sought after.
Over the years we have established mutually beneficial partnerships with organisations including the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Adelaide and Sydney Film Festivals and the Australia Council for the Arts, as well as attracting project partners such as the City of Melbourne and the Australia-Japan Foundation.
Drawing on backgrounds as diverse as visual arts curating and public communications, our energetic team bring highly developed skills and passionate commitment to our specialised services.
Experimenta ably offers advice and expertise to assist private, corporate and government partners in realising a surprising, involving and rewarding vision that speaks to business innovation, to the community, and to the future.
